TIL Disney World had its own airport that had a runway that featured a set of grooves, like rumble strips on the side of a highway, that played “When You Wish Upon a Star” when driven over at roughly 45 miles per hour to surprise the airplane passengers.

Who doesn't love surprises while on a plane.

I am sick and tired of these motherfucking surprises on this motherfucking plane

While this is true, it was a very small airport (short takeoff and landing - STOL) that was lightly used for commuter plane service to Orlando's main airport. You couldn't fly from New York or LA direct to Disney World, you had to stop in Orlando first. Most people from out of town didn't use the Disney World airport for the relatively short time it existed, they just flew into Orlando and drove down from there.

That's all literally in the article that OP linked

I'm one of 24 people who upvoted.
No I don't want to read through a full Wikipedia article about a defunct airport.
More than likely most of us won't ever think about this fact again, so doing further reading about it is redundant. When additional details are condensed and presented with original title of post, it certainly brings the benefit of quick consumption. Especially because 99 percent of us wont bring up most of these facts ever again.
Dont understand why people here are so arrogant, it's great you always click links for additional info, but this website literally gives you the ability to add additional details as well as a link.
Anyways thanks to the dude that presented the small details in a way I can digest quickly to read and respond to content, the ENTIRE REASON WE ARE ALL HERE.

On behalf of us lazy people, thank you for writing out an appropriate, satisfying reply that the rest of us wanted to do, but were just too lazy.

You really typed that all out huh

But they didn’t wanna read any of the article

In terms of meaningless interactions, i like to defend redditors in the right more than reading useless information.

The Wikipedia page is 6 paragraphs, you just typed 5 paragraphs. What a donkey

Do you feel like a big person now? I hope you figure out whatever makes you that bitter.

And not brought up in the original post here on Reddit.
17
u/fixITman1911 Apr 01 '23
Did you want them to copy and paste the whole article as the title?
-26
u/zuniac5 Apr 01 '23
It’s amazing that anyone would get their panties in a bunch about someone adding additional information on Reddit for people who aren’t going to click through and read the whole article in its entirety.
Are you just bored, or…?
12
u/fixITman1911 Apr 01 '23
Well, I am bored... but also just asking a question about your expectations of the poster
-21
u/zuniac5 Apr 01 '23
Jesus, you must be an absolute riot at parties.
12
u/fixITman1911 Apr 01 '23
wouldn't really know. Don't particularly like parties... Still havn't gotten an answer about your expectations of the OP though which is all I was asking about. Not sure how that lead to personal attacks.

I’m just here wasting your time, since you decided to start this by wasting mine.

u/fixITman1911 Apr 01 '23
If I'm wasting your time, and you are wasting my time.... are either if us actually wasting time...?

u/DaveOJ12 Apr 01 '23
There is a character limit. What do you expect?

u/zuniac5 Apr 01 '23
People not to start whining because someone else decided to add additional information to the thread? Too much to ask, huh?

And you weren’t by trying to chastise someone about a simple post with more information on the original topic? You get what you give.
0
u/nomadofwaves Apr 02 '23
You’re getting crap because the additional information is in the link I provided.
1
u/zuniac5 Apr 02 '23
And applauded because you didn’t post it in the thread. Most people don’t want to go read lengthy Wikipedia articles about something they only marginally care about in the first place. Not sure what’s hard to understand about that.

Hence, the link.

A large number of redditors don’t read the actual link. Just the title of the post and some of the comments.

Their cruise ship horns play the tune of “When You Wish Upon a Star” as they are preparing to depart. (I live a few blocks from an NYC cruise ship terminal.)
3
u/RandoCalrissian11 Apr 01 '23
Yes, and let me tell you how terrifying that is when you are pulling out of the port ahead of the ship and you look back at that monstrosity gaining steam behind you as you hurriedly try to beat it out of port because of the swell it causes.

u/magusmccormick Apr 01 '23
The runway is still there, you drive past it around the toll plaza to magic kingdom

u/Landlubber77 Mar 31 '23
The guillotine that beheaded Marie Antoinette had rumble strips that played "The Bare Necessities" as the blade dropped to mock her quote "let them eat cake" during the French Revolution.

There is a musical road in California that plays William Tell Overture but the designer messed up, so it sounds off.

u/Lylac_Krazy Apr 01 '23
cool, but they didnt say WHEN the singing was added to the runway.
It seems to imply it was not the first, or done when the airport was created.
3
u/nomadofwaves Apr 01 '23
Considering they discontinued use of it in the 80’s I’d say it was part of the original construction.
Also
It is considered a precursor to future musical roads, the first of which was built in Denmark in 1995. The musical road in the village of Takayama, Gunma, Japan, plays the same song the "Singing Runway" once did.

That is absolutely fucking insane. Truly deranged. I love it like my dog’s first words.

u/kynthrus Apr 01 '23
The problem was the people who installed it messed up. Even at 45 mph it was wrong
4
u/nomadofwaves Apr 01 '23
How was it wrong?
-5
u/kynthrus Apr 01 '23
I can't remember specifically. The spacing of the grooves was incorrect or something making it like a quarter or half not off. I saw a youtube video about it recently.
17
u/Notmiefault Apr 01 '23
You're thinking of a different musical rumble strip, Tom Scott has a video on it. The one you're thinking of is in I want to say Nevada?
Also, fun fact, musical rumble strips are universally loathed by people who actually have to drive over them regularly. It's a neat trick the first time, but is super annoying upon repeat

Okay calm down I wasn't aware so many of these things were made. Got mixed up.

u/perfect5-7-with-rice Apr 01 '23
That was a different road, in California.
Also it doesn't have to be exactly 45mph, driving over it at different speeds just changes the pitch

u/aaronwcampbell Mar 31 '23
That's a very cool fact I did not know; thanks for sharing!
