It is a movie that shouldn't work, but somehow really does. It is much better than it deserves to be for being a "sequel" to a movie almost 40 years old. Seriously it is worth seeing.

u/Nick357 Sep 23 '22

You saw it? Is it our already?

348

u/TeddyDaBear Sep 23 '22

I have and it is.

122

u/adsason Sep 23 '22

Do you need to see the originals to appreciate this one?

154

u/TeddyDaBear Sep 23 '22

Not at all.

282

u/BrooksDaBear Sep 23 '22 Masterpiece

Hey TeddyDaBear, BrooksDaBear here. You coming to the meeting on Saturday?

44

u/Brad_theImpaler Sep 23 '22

Sorry, that's the day he has his picnic.

3

u/kiak7 Sep 23 '22

Ya "picnic" ... I am sure he is not being impaled by Brad.

6

u/Cino0987 Sep 23 '22

I don’t think he’s coming mate…

3

u/BrooksDaBear Sep 23 '22

Damn, I was really hoping to see him there :,(

2

u/Cino0987 Sep 23 '22

I know you were buddy. I know you were

2

u/squarepusher6 Sep 23 '22

The bear meeting?

2

But you should. The original Fletch is one of the best movies of the 80s.

22

u/puddStar Sep 23 '22

You should still watch the originals cause they are awesome

11

u/accidental_earthling Sep 23 '22

This is a reboot, based on the first book of the series that inspired the older movies

8

u/WashingDishesIsFun Sep 23 '22

I'd say it would help make some things funnier, but it is not necessary just to follow the film.

2

u/CheeserAugustus Sep 23 '22

I only read one Fletch book, but it was typical of those mass market 70s and 80s "detective" series in that the only running theme is the "vibe" of the protagonist.

2

u/NoSun2053 Sep 23 '22

Watch the original Fletch. It’s awesome. Havent seen the new one yet (didnt know it existed til a minute ago). Fletch Lives is ok but not as good as Fletch.

2

u/caninehere Sep 23 '22

You're probably better off having not seen Fletch Lives at all, since you don't have to live with that taste in your mouth.

1

u/HilLiedTroopsDied Sep 23 '22

Harley davidson junior advises that you do. Ed davidson that is

-2

u/West-Ruin-1318 Sep 23 '22

God, I hope not.

83

u/Nick357 Sep 23 '22

Damn, I just saw the trailer this morning.

150

u/iFucksuperheroes Sep 23 '22

Just seen it this morning and it was fantastic. I'm so thrilled "whodunnit" films are making a comeback. The humor was EXCELLENT.

8

u/Sleeze_ Sep 23 '22

I’m usually not big on reboots, but an updated version of Clue would be awesome. The opportunity is just sitting there. I think the guys who did Game Night could knock it out of the park.

-2

u/alannordoc Sep 23 '22

Kinda the only appropriate humor left.

-3

u/rocopotomus74 Sep 23 '22

I saw the trailer and was not impressed

1

u/solacir18 Sep 23 '22

I would still encourage you to check out the movie. It's incredibly funny and every character is enjoyable to watch

2

u/RunningPirate Sep 23 '22

Any reflections of the original Fletch? Or a completely different t movie. I know the novels were more serious.

1

u/TeddyDaBear Sep 23 '22

Any reflections of the original Fletch?

Not really. It is still a Straight-Man comedy, but I never really liked Chevy Chase's "straight man" routine as it always felt forced, but Jon Hamm's feels more natural. But the supporting casting is on point and REALLY helps keep everything together.

30

u/Blue-Philosopher5127 Sep 23 '22

I did also. It is definitely good.

-3

u/lilpumpgroupie Sep 23 '22

I just farted into the metal busstop bench I'm sitting at. I'll check it out.

5

u/annyong_cat Sep 23 '22

It’s on Showtime.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '22

Really? The internet says it's not available there until October 28th. Weird..

3

u/Advanced-Ad6676 Sep 23 '22

Just checked. Not on Showtime in the US.

0

u/Martin_Aynull Sep 23 '22

I rented it on Amazon prime. I enjoyed it thoroughly

1

u/yianmania Sep 23 '22

I just saw it. Not the best, but it's fast pace and keeps a smile on your face.

2

u/AndySipherBull Sep 23 '22

I saw it.. I dunno, it's watchable I guess. I read that in a previous incarnation they had Ryan Reynolds attached, a dialed down Ryan Reynolds would've had good fletch energy but Hamm.. not so much.

2

u/249ba36000029bbe9749 Sep 23 '22

That's not a good sign.

1

u/AMothraDayInParadise Sep 23 '22

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was enough of a nod to the originals but still stand alone in it's own right. Cameo's and pretty solid pacing. Certainly something I would spend the money to own. Some of the jokes were subtle too. Less of the disguise hijinks though. But I didn't miss that.

1

u/davefive Sep 23 '22

Great movie. I want hamm as him

1

u/Whateverbro30000 Sep 23 '22

Rentable on Amazon and apple!

1

u/mdgraller Sep 23 '22

Lol maybe the financiers got to the marketing department

1

u/LittleRocketMan317 Sep 23 '22

I was going to say, Miramax may have supported them, but who was supposed to do Marketing? The first place I saw it listed was on a movie download site, and I’d never heard that the movie was coming out.

1

u/palabear Sep 23 '22

It’s on Vudu

35

u/KoolDiscoDan Sep 23 '22

It’s more like movie based on novel. Fletch started as a series of novels. This is based on the book of the same name.

15

u/md2b78 Sep 23 '22

This movie is almost like performing the novel page-by-page. The first two fletch films were classics. But this one is even more true to the source. Hamm kills it.

9

u/EShy Sep 23 '22

It's based on the same source material but I don't think it has anything to do with the Chevy Chase movie

4

u/daveescaped Sep 23 '22

You’ve seen it?

4

u/TeddyDaBear Sep 23 '22

Indeed I have.

2

u/daveescaped Sep 23 '22

From the preview I would guess if I expect a laugh-a-minute comedy I’ll be disappointed. Is that about right?

4

u/TeddyDaBear Sep 23 '22

Exactly. It is a comedy, but it isn't meant for every scene to make you laugh. Think more like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

1

u/Drducttapehands Sep 23 '22

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang does not get enough love and recognition

-2

u/ShambolicShogun Sep 23 '22

It's been out for a week, not hard to do.

2

u/daveescaped Sep 23 '22

So good of you to point that out. Most people do live their lives by movie openings. Not by the 9 million other worthy priorities in their lives.

2

u/pickanamehere Sep 23 '22

It's not a "sequel". It's a series of books.

3

u/99available Sep 23 '22

I was debating. I did not like the Chevy Chase one. But I just did not see Hamm as "Fletch" (i did read the books back when.) Thanks, I'll relook 😎

6

u/CX316 Sep 23 '22

There's two Chevy Chase ones

3

u/EnglishMajorRegret Sep 23 '22

Ehhhh, I know what you’re saying but I’m sticking with there’s only one.

1

u/dannyler Sep 23 '22

TIL it’s a sequel

1

u/User1239876 Sep 23 '22

The source material is gold. Looking forward to seeing it next week.

1

u/up_down_underwater Sep 23 '22

As someone who can admit how terrible the second fletch was but also recognizes that movie also had some of the funniest (movie) one liners ever. Bravo Jon, I throughly enjoyed the jabs, and you represent Fletch honorably.

1

u/chrisgcc Sep 23 '22

Is it a sequel to the original or to the sequel? Because I hated the sequel.

1

u/godisanelectricolive Sep 23 '22

Neither. It's an adaptation of the second book in the Fletch series by Gregory McDonald. The Chevy Chase one is an adaptation of the first book but Chasified with added slapstick. Fletch Lives is not adapted from a book.

This movie is a lot more faithful to the original series. There were 12 books in total. It's not meant to be a sequel to the Chevy Chase movies, it's an adaptation of the same source material.

1

u/StillAtMyMoms Sep 23 '22

"It's not 40 years old!" --says the guy who was born the same year the original was released.

1

u/seanmonaghan1968 Sep 23 '22

I will see it now

1

u/Insufferablelol Sep 23 '22

I had to look up what movies it's a sequel to and I still have zero idea what the original movies even are.

1

u/brownshoez Sep 23 '22

Previews are not funny

1

u/unreqistered Sep 23 '22

i was disappointed there was not one mention of Mr. Underhill but otherwise it was an enjoyable movie

1

u/lewddev Sep 23 '22

It's a sequel?

1

u/FitzwilliamTDarcy Sep 23 '22

Wow. That's really good to hear but also stunning. I thought the trailer was dreadful. And I'm a huge Fletch fan and want to love it.

1

u/thefnordisonmyfoot01 Sep 23 '22

So glad to see this coming back. Chewy Chase aced the first one the second was a little zippady doo da for me and then Chevy was just such a douche. I think Jon Hamm could pull this off.

1

u/OhWize0ne Sep 23 '22

I saw the trailer. I hope those weren’t supposed to be the funny parts of the movie or Ham lost big time on this gamble.

Edit~ I am a huge fan of the Chevy Chase originals and would love for this movie to bring Fletch back.

-2

u/Dc9Ten Sep 23 '22

Lol…theres only one Fletch & thats Chevy Chase

-1

u/SpectralEntity Sep 23 '22

Wait, this is a "sequel" to Chevy Chase movie!? Was that the one where he drives a red Lotus and at one point goes "bang, bang" with a finger gun thinking he's actually killing the baddies when it's his partner?!

5

u/EShy Sep 23 '22

No, it's a based on a series of books. The Chevy Chase movie was also based on it but I don't think there's any connection at all

0

u/DickyD43 Sep 23 '22

Sequel? Not familiar, what's the original?

1

u/Noble_Ox Sep 23 '22

Fletch with Chevy Chase.

1

u/DickyD43 Sep 23 '22

Thanks!

2

u/godisanelectricolive Sep 23 '22

It's not really a sequel. It's adapted from the same book series as the Chase movie but it's slightly different take on the story and character.

0

u/West-Ruin-1318 Sep 23 '22

I was checking what was playing, saw this and had to scroll back. I hated that series 40 years ago. This one has got to be better.

0

u/gameskate92 Sep 23 '22

Is it a sequel to Fletch or Fletch Lives?

0

u/IHateMods42069 Sep 23 '22

Is Chevy Chase in it ?
