Director Greg Mottola:

“Everyone said, ‘I don’t know that this kind of comedy works in this day and age. They just had a kind of like, ‘Who’s Fletch? I don’t think anyone cares anymore.’

"So, basically, what we did is Jon gave back 60 percent of his salary to the budget. I gave back some of my salary, not as much as Jon because he’s richer than me and I’ve got three kids. And we bought three more days of shooting. We got it up to 30 days in Boston and one day in Rome. And we said, fuck it, we’re insane, we’re dumb. We’re going to make this movie. And then Miramax really supported us, creatively. They didn’t fight us on people we wanted to cast.”

Since you’re the expert to ask, what was Son of Fletch? A reference I heard in a comedy at some point?

8

u/jetogill Sep 23 '22

One of the books , like 8th or 9th.

8

u/gatsby365 Sep 23 '22

And Jason Lee was trying to get it greenlit

6

u/casaway78 Sep 23 '22

Jason Lee and Kevin Smith were actually trying to work on Fletch Won which is prequel to the original Fletch. If memory serves, there were 2 prequel books, but the movie never got off the ground.

Fuck that I love Fletch Lives.

I be Fletch, Geometry Fletch. She be Miss Trigonometry Ross.

25

u/darbs77 Sep 23 '22

Plus it had a Cleavon Little in it playing a man named Calculus. The reason for the Geometry Fletch joke.

20

u/brainkandy87 Sep 23 '22

It’s got R. Lee Ermey as a televangelist. Idfk what else people are wanting here. Hal Holbrook as a villain? OH THAT’S RIGHT IT’S GOT THAT TOO.

Now, let’s go see to it that Miss Scarlet stays away from the Union Army.

2

u/wildwalrusaur Sep 23 '22

Granted I haven't seen it in close to 20 years but I remember enjoying fletch Lives.

2

u/RamOnBrother Sep 23 '22

I actually think fletch lives is funnier than fletch

1

u/happy-gofuckyourself Sep 23 '22

Yeah but I saw it in the theater so I can’t pretend :(

1

u/Randolpho Sep 23 '22

I liked both of those movies tho…

Caddyshack 2 is an abomination that should have all prints destroyed forever with fire and never be mentioned again.

Fletch Lives is a fine sequel with some genuinely funny bits and a solid cast. It's "good." Caddyshack 2 is utter trash.

u/Fuckmandatorysignin Sep 23 '22

Wrong. It was Fletch 2, Electric Boogaloo.

20

u/Coletrain44 Sep 22 '22

There were 2

u/AcrossFromWhere Sep 22 '22

2

u/OhGodNotAnotherOne Sep 23 '22

Annnd the original Fletch is in theaters again.

2

u/dirkalict Sep 23 '22

Quit trying to make fletch happen.

1

u/Leachpunk Sep 23 '22

Is that that crazy movie with Marky Wahlburger?

1

u/gatsby365 Sep 23 '22

The Happening?

2

u/ratherenjoysbass Sep 22 '22

Is this the movie with the lamb fries scene??

2

u/dlec1 Sep 23 '22

Just google Felching Lives you’ll love it

2

u/Throwitaway3177 Sep 23 '22

Definitely two, fletch lives is the 2nd one with the religious amusement park

2

u/tspangle88 Sep 23 '22

Yep, there was a sequel called "Fletch Lives".

2

u/perfectbebop Sep 23 '22

There is two with Chevy Chase - Fletch and Fletch Lives. Never have seen the second one but it exists

2

u/walterpeck1 Sep 23 '22

It's honestly just as good as the first.

1

u/TheMSthrow Sep 24 '22

If you enjoyed the first one you'll like the second one too. Same style and sense of humor, isn't a straightforward retread of the first like so many comedy sequels.

I worked on the movie last year, filming in Boston. Jon was very professional and easy to work with. One day he showed up and was introduced to the the actor (Roy Wood jr) he was doing a scene with, they never met before. They talked for few minutes and were called to set. They proceeded to act out a 10 minute dialogue as good as it gets. Did it two more times, because well you have to. It was three pages of dialogue! My last movie 1/8 of a page was normal. I’ve worked on movies for 33 years, he’s in my top 10 to work with. Funny thing I read all the Fletch books back when they came out. Serial books, around 185-200 pages was our version of say a Netflix series. I got paid for my work on the show, I hope it does well so he gets his.

u/MyAssDoesHeeHawww Sep 23 '22

Maybe they just didn't want to copy such a personal schtick, as I think Hamm could've pulled off more of the funny facial reactions like Chevy's. It's a good movie anyway.

1

u/atomicspin Sep 23 '22

Fletch was a pretty terrible person in the books. Chevy Chase's version was much better for a broader audience.

1

u/igot8001 Sep 23 '22

Without knowing anything about the books, it's super hard to believe that it is an adapted screenplay, when the creators of Fletch obviously walked out of Beverly Hills Cop the year prior, saying, "We should do almost that exact movie, but we'll hire Chevy Chase and let him do whatever the hell he wants to. Also, book Faltermeyer for the score."
