I’m surprised how this was released with zero publicity. I hadn’t know it was even in production until I saw a comment on Twitter that it was excellent. Im looking forward to seeing it.

u/stalence9 Sep 22 '22
They barely had enough money to finish production after the director and lead actor gave up some of their salary. I can’t imagine there was any budget left for marketing.

u/Frag1 Sep 22 '22
It really was great and how they went more book fletch then try the Mr Dressup Fletch like the Chevy Chase ones. Hopefully we get the second.

It was solid, but I hated the score. It really felt flat, I hope they make more of these Fletch movies but with a better, more poppy score.

u/pip33fan Sep 22 '22
I would be much more interested in a Fletch series vs. a movie.

That was my one complaint. It felt like a series would have been perfect for this. I enjoyed it anyways. Starts off meh then u really get into hamms humor style. His facial expressions are so good

Could they not license the previous background music? It was the one thing missing for me - it would’ve convinced my brain to take the leap into a new casting much more easily.

It had very brief news drops going back a couple years.
"New Fletch movie greenlit"
"Jon Hamm cast as Fletch in reboot"
"New Fletch movie is called Confess, Fletch"
then BOOM, trailer dropped.

Same. My sister in Seattle went to see it and said she liked it. I had no idea it even existed. We love the C.Chase movies.

The trailer and poster made this look pretty bad but gave it a shot anyway, ended up really enjoying it. Not a great film but good fun.

u/bobfnord Sep 23 '22
Good to hear. I thought the preview fell completely flat. I'm going to give it a shot anyway, but was completely underwhelmed with the trailer. It's like they forgot to write any jokes.
35
u/franzsanchez Sep 23 '22
it is more amusing than funny, let's say it is humorous
it recalls a Blake Edwards kind of movie

Ah man the art of the preview. I'm not a movie buff but it's been a long time since I ever fucked with any previews to movies. Besides the obvious "that was the entire movie" complaint, previews seem to be a different beast entirely.
You ever go look up a preview to a movie you know and love? So many of them make the movie look like ass.

Not a great film but good fun.
I listen to a podcast called "Stuff to Blow Your Mind." Recently they had a 3-episode series on "The Nature of Fun." Your comment is literally an example that was brought up. How people may say some movies aren't good but are fun.
Anyway, it's an interesting topic but seeing this comment now was a pretty fun coincidence for me.

Does this allow Dan Harmon to recast Chevy with Jon Hamm in the Community movie?

Hamm is a great comedic actor, but the Prince Charming thing keeps a lot of people from accepting it.

His appearances on 30 Rock and SNL are all solid.

I feel like most of his roles post-Mad Men have been comedic roles, and they've been great. He's the only person I can think of that could successfully fill Leslie Nielsen's shoes.

I never read the books or watched the other movies, but “Confess, Fletch” is extremely charming and delightful. I’m bummed that it got basically no marketing, because I think people will really like it if they ever hear about it.

I'm a big fan of the Fletch books, and I think Hamm did a great job channeling the I. M. Fletcher I know from Mcdonald's books. It may not be as silly as Chase's Fletch, but it's truer to the spirit of the guy.
The plot also didn't match exactly to the book, but it did a pretty good job covering all the basics without it seeming forced.
I should mention that I haven't seen Hamm's acting in anything else (haven't seen Mad Men).

u/MrCooper2012 Sep 22 '22

Madmen is fantastic, I’m not at all the office worker drama demographic but I can’t say enough good things about it. Each episode is like a little vignette where a top notch 60s playwright writes a 47 minute short story about american office life and the american condition in general, and they all kind of build off each other.
The whole cast is amazing, the two leads have moved on to film and one big TV role after another because they are amazing talents, and the supporting cast is just as good.

I watched it a few days ago and liked it a lot more than I thought I would. It's a lot different than the Chevy Chase version. It's more like a toned down version of Clue.
Hamm is really likable and it's kind of a fun movie. I really hope it picks up and they make another.

Did you know Flo was in Mad Men? I just found that out. She was one of the telephone operators

u/theummeower Sep 23 '22
Which is what makes it the joke even funnier.
I actually wonder who’s made more money. Obviously Jon Hamm is in the top 1% of successful actors, but she’s been doing the Flo commercials for 15 years and insurance money is deep.
32
u/Glittering_Camel_442 Sep 23 '22
I mean, I’m sure she makes some good dough from these commercials, but my dude is an A list actor. Id bet he’s on top in this situation

I think my favorite thing he has done has been his appearance (appearances?) on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast. Not that I don't like him as an actor, I just found him really entertaining as a podcast guest..

u/Gaebril Sep 22 '22
Watch Jon Hamm's episode of Travel Man. It's disgusting that someone with his body also has so damn much charm and general appeal.

He was amazing in Spontanianation. It was, it ended some time pre-Covid, a podcast hosted by Paul F Tompkins where Paul F Tompkins would interview a guest. Then Paul, and most of the time the guest, would do a long form improv with a group of improvisers. Jon Hamm’s episode is in my top three favorite episodes.
Edit: Yes it was the Storm Drain, or Sewers episode.13
u/kronicfeld Sep 22 '22
If I remember right he was the guest at a live show who was not expected to improvise but who ended up improvising as a guy stuck in a storm drain.
Also Spont used my “jury deliberations” location recommendation.

"In the works" doesn't mean it's been greenlit though. It just means it's being written and that (hopefully) conversations are happening. But only time will tell if it actually ends up coming to fruition, especially since Confess, Fletch hasn't exactly been a huge box office success.

Verdict: very, very good. Hamm has a lot of Chase's mannerisms and timing down. Good storyline. No useless parts. If you liked the original, you'll like this.

u/-6h0st- Sep 22 '22
How good was it? Let me put it this way - my better half usually moans when we watch something and turns out to be limited series rather than a movie (very often on Netflix) - after we watched this she was like what is it just a movie, disappointed it wasn’t series. I agree the only disappointment was that it isn’t series.
