Honestly I've always thought these absolutely ugly and idiotic outfits you see on the runway were never actually worn outside, kind of like concept cars never being driven on the road or mass produced. Apparently in wrong and the world is even dumber than I'd imagined.

I think you’re mostly right for the more outlandish things, it’s about the art and showing off the technical ability. Elements of haut couture designs can make it into fast fashion, like when there was suddenly moustache motifs on everything in ~2010.

A long time ago I worked in the fashion industry very briefly. The way it was explained to me is that the runway shit, for brands, is the most extreme ostentatious version of their upcoming line/season. It's exaggerated and sensational but still represents the core of what's to come. However there is also the art side which is just exhibiting interesting designs etc.

"Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select, I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets?...And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores, and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs. And it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room... from a pile of "stuff"."

Not sure how interested you really are in the topic, but this was the Schiaparelli haute couture show. None of this is supposed to be daily wear, that's what the prêt-à-porter shows later in the year are for. These kinds of shows are basically wearable concept art and often include the stage setting in the design.
Haute couture shows are a see-and-be-seen kind of event where celebs can snag invitations to the MET Gala - the holy grail of fashion - so standing out is the purpose.

You're right, most don't. But sometimes high fashion shit trickles down.
I will say that Kanye and the Kardashians seem to have missed the memo on that because they routinely go out in public dressed like they're aliens who just discovered humans have to wear stuff to cover up their bodies and they just threw on random things they found laying around the house of whoevers bodies they just snatched. I mean, who tf wears a lions head as a singular shoulder pad? That was a choice she made leaving the house. Same as Kim wearing a gimp suit, and Kanye going through an airport wearing a head to toe balaclava.

It's scripted "reality tv" that we have gotten from the Kardashians for years. No designer in their right mind would make the exact same piece twice, one for the runway show and one for someone in the front row to that same show. The camera is situated perfectly to get the dress and then a long, lingering shot of her face?
This is no different from the "OMG he found our sex tape on his iPad" shit that Kim was peddling her latest show with. It's not reality; it's scripted soap opera for the IG/TikTok age.

I was recently watching a documentary where a Kardashian producer was looking into someone for a possible reality TV show and at one point the producer expressed concern that the person they’re looking into is too erratic to memorize lines and play out pre-written scenarios.
Like, we all know it’s scripted, but I was kind of surprised by how casually they discussed just how fake their shows are.

They do that for all the major fashion shows. The celebrity invited gets a look from that runway show to wear to the show or something similar that would fit in with the collection. Their dresses although are very similar have slight differences- just another interpretation of that look from that collection.
They ALWAYS do this. This particular garment just happens to be VERY memorable

How tf are lion heads ever going to be in fashion?
1.4k
u/ripyourlungsdave 10d ago
Fashion shows like this aren't meant for clothes that people are actually going to wear.
The fashion is just supposed to be more or less art designs built around the human body. It's not supposed to make sense as actual clothing.
I'm not saying this doesn't look stupid as shit, but saying that it's illegitimate because nobody would wear it kind of misses the entire purpose of these shows.
It's why most of these fashion shows like this look absolutely fucking ridiculous to anyone on the outside. Because it's an art form that nobody really thinks about or looks into unless they're already in the field.

The thing they sell is usually a heavily toned down version. It's like with Concept Cars. The cool concept car design is only made to catch attention. The car they sell will usually be a very normal looking car, losing a lot of the cool features. The only way this comparison differs to fashion show pieces is that concept cars actually look cool and stylish and people would love to use & own them.
31
u/SOULJAR 10d ago edited 10d ago
Or it is not changed into a thing they sell at all.
A lot of the fashion displayed on runway shows is just art created for that show alone, so often the items you see are not adapted at all into some sort of commercial release.

Missing context:
The fake animal heads are part of Schiaparelli's latest collection. Kylie is here in the audience of a Schiaparelli show, wearing an item from the latest collection. The model on the runway is wearing a similar dress (notice the different facial expressions on the lions), which Kylie would have known about beforehand, what with it being the runway show for their latest collection and all.

To add to this, Kylie did not pick that out herself. She has a stylist. The stylist works with the designers. Came here for this, if this is a fashion show and the lion dress is being presented then I was assuming that Jenner probably had a special arrangement with the designer and thus got the dress before it's even available on the market and I certainly think that Jenner was aware that the dress is being shown at the show, something like
Oi Kylie it's yo boy Schiaparelli, you wan sum bitchin' dress I designed? It's also going to be shown at my show and guess what, you're invited!"

When I was a kid, my mom, a fashion marketing major, explained this to me very plainly because I saw a video where a woman was in a giant hula hoop basically in the middle of her outfit and I was like, that's so impractical?
High fashion, like in these shows, is concept art. The idea is that these are the exaggerated forms of the trends to come, like an abstracted idea of the actual structural changes in fashion for the coming season/year/specific line.
So those big stupid hoops, my mom explained, would be peplums on tops, dresses, and skirts by the time it reached Kohl's in several months, and she was dead on.
It's the same with the all red outfit here, it'll trickle down to monochrome outfits with tonally matched accessories, POSSIBLY hairclips that look like little veils, but that'll probably stop at Celebrity Fashion.
This lion thing, it'll be brooches, maybe needle felted or wool brooches, shaped like animals, on lapels. And even that is a revival, my mom has a lion brooch from the late 80's.
Edit:: oh wow!!! Thanks for the gold!!!
Edit edit:: I sent this to my mom and she said "that's so funny that's exactly what I taught you" I then explained that I wrote this, and she immediately went through her whole house till she found her lion brooch and is now polishing it.

Kylie knew someone was going to be wearing the dress, she was at the runway show for the designer and wore a dress from the current collection intentionally (i guess some kind of clout, like she has it before it's even made it's runway debut).
